In my opinion, George Carlin was pained by the US not living up to its potential and ideals. I love this country. I might not say it out loud but, I do admire what the dream of America represents. Hypocrisy, anger, resentment, loneliness. They are all easy feelings to get trapped under. You have to want better. He says, "We were informed". We had a smaller number of ways to get information which meant we could consume and process it. Take our time with it. Now we are bombarded. We drown in information. I think I have to agree with him, I'm Australian, but at one point the U.S.A. was the greatest country in the world. It used to stand up for the little guy......But now it just....stands on the little guy. What happened? I don't know what the greatest country in the world is, but there are 2 things that I do know, that the U.S. is not and Australia has surpassed the U.S.A. Some candidates for greatest country may include but are not limited to: Switzerland, Canada, U.K. Germany, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, U.A.E. Norway, Hong Kong, Iceland, Sweden, Singapore. Those are some pretty damn great countries.

All these people bitching about Trump and “democracy” are completely missing the point of this speech. Also, America isn’t a democracy. We’re a constitutional republic. Directly after watching this video a presidential ad came on with Barack Obama and Joe Biden asking me to buy a 3$ mug for his campaign, after he just raised tens of millions of dollars from rich donors and lobbyists. I hope I don't live to see the fall but we are definitely in the process.

America IS the greatest country ever known on earth. The USA has, and does, provide more opportunity and more freedom than any country ever. That's why people risk their lives everyday to come here. Canada has given up there guns and they have compelled speech laws. CANADA NO LONGER HAS FREEDOM OF SPEECH. Japan is free because the USA freed their people in WW2. ‘Sure used to be.’ That nostalgic note undercuts the most important point here. It’s not that the USA isn’t number one by any of the criteria he lists (literacy, maths, science, life expectancy, infant mortality, median household income, labour force and exports), it’s that IT NEVER WAS. The disastrous education and healthcare systems in the USA are the result of inequality, historical and present.
